10. There are so many cool critters out there. There just aren’t enough hours in the day to study all the cool things that are out there. I have to content myself with reading about them.
I wish I could go higher than 10. One of my biggest wishes sometimes is that I studied cnidarians (jellyfish, anemones, corals) instead of bats. They’re basically the superheroes of the ocean, after all! And they look so cool.
I had almost forgotten that I had wanted to be a marine biologist after reading this awesome book: “Lads Before the Wind” by Karen Pryor! The title comes from a quote in “Moby Dick” (which I confess I never read), and refers to the habit of dolphins and porpoises riding the waves along the bow of ships. It’s an incredible book that teaches you about porpoise training. I was so inspired that when I read it (I was about 11), I set about trying to train my guppy to jump over a matchstick!
