I’m very lucky that I DON’T have claustrophobia (an extreme or irrational fear of confined places) since I often go caving (the sport of exploring caves–not to be confused with what we call the “sneaker and flashlight brigade,” otherwise known as recreational spelunkers)! I will confess, though, that I do a lot better with “squeezes” (really tight places in caves that you literally have to squeeze through) when I know that it “goes” (it doesn’t just hit a dead-end), and particularly when I know how long to expect to be in the squeeze. Really nasty squeezes can be prolonged wriggle-fests where you have to take off your helmet and can’t even move your head! It’s times like that that I have to remind myself that I’m not claustrophobic and slow down my breathing to get through!
How about you? Have you ever been in a cave? Do you get claustrophobic?
