I first got involved in research through Earthwatch. Back in high school I spent a few weeks of summer doing science experiments on the Mississippi and in Puerto Rico. It was amazingly fun and taught me a lot about science. I wonder if they still have their free scholarship program?

I became involved in science when I lived in South Africa for half a year. I lived in the savannah, in Kruger National Park, and was so curious about my surrounding beautiful environment that I had to learn more, so I volunteered and got involved in local research!

I got involved in studying human evolution after I took a course called “Human Origins” in college to satisfy the requirements for a minor in Anthropology. I then saw an ad on the college bulletin board looking for teaching assistants to help with the same course. Since I’d gotten an “A” and I really enjoy teaching, I applied and got the job! It was an amazing fit, and I’ve been interested in the subject ever since. It’s also helped impress upon me just how important that teaching can be to formulating your scientific hypotheses, bc it really helps clarify your thinking, and can lead you down new paths, too! I think education and outreach are an invaluable part of science, and that’s why I joined this competition! 🙂
