My favorite part of nature is that it constantly surprises you. Evolution has created endless forms that are weird, beautiful, strange, and terrifying all over the world, and every species of animal, plant, fungus, bacteria, etc. has its own strange, long history to tell.

It’s beauty. The smell of rain or fresh cut grass in the summer. Buds on plants after a really long and cold winter in MN….it doesn’t get much better than that 🙂

I love the mystery. As Jeff said, there is such an amazing diversity of wild and wonderful adaptations and interactions. Scientists are just beginning to understand how they come about, what they are and why. It will be centuries before we really understand whats going on out there, and that fascinates me.

Definitely mammals. I’m the person that wants to hug and pet every animal she sees (which unfortunately, you REALLY have to keep in check as a scientist). I love all these fabulous creatures that are so much like us in the ways that they interact with their families and others. I also grew up on the “Redwall” books, so I like to imagine them all talking and having adventurous lives, themselves! I wonder what they think of us!
